DBS and CRB Checks Explained: What You Need to Know

Have a couple of questions regarding your DBS/CRB? Check out this article.

When applying for roles in health, social care, education, or other regulated sectors, you may be asked to complete a DBS check. This page explains what DBS and CRB checks are, why they are needed, and what to expect during the process.

What is the difference between a DBS and a CRB?

There is no difference between a DBS and a CRB check. The Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) and the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) merged to form the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

CRB checks are now called DBS checks. You may still hear both terms used, but they refer to the same process.

Why do I need a DBS check?

A DBS check allows employers to review criminal record information to help decide whether a person is suitable for a particular role. This is especially important for roles that involve working with children or vulnerable adults.

DBS checks support safer recruitment decisions and help organisations create safe working environments. It is important to remember that a DBS check is just one part of the overall recruitment process.

How long does a DBS check take?

A DBS check can take up to 14 days, although it may take longer in some cases. Delays can happen if:

      • information is entered incorrectly
      • multiple police forces need to be involved

Providing accurate information when completing your DBS application can help avoid delays.

How often do I need a DBS check?

Official guidance suggests that DBS checks should be renewed every three years. However, some organisations may request checks more frequently depending on their internal policies.

Renewal periods can range from every six months to every two years, depending on the role and organisation.

If you use the DBS Online Update Service, employers can check your DBS status online, meaning you may not need to complete a new check as often.

Important: Keep your printed DBS certificate safe and do not throw it away.

What is the DBS Online Update Service?

The DBS Online Update Service is an optional subscription service that helps keep your DBS certificate up to date.

      It allows employers to:

      • check whether your DBS status has changed
      • view your certificate information online

This service applies to standard and enhanced DBS certificates and can save time during future applications.
